Picture! V-22 Osprey at-sea landing

This picture brought to you by

By Cpl. Salvador R. Moreno / Marine Corps

A pair of MV-22 Osprey, with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 166 Sea Elk, and VMM-161 Greyhawks, rest on the flight deck as a landing craft, with Assault Craft Unit 5, exits the Makin Island to conduct training during Exercise Iron Fist on March 1. This is the first time the Osprey has been aboard the Makin Island. Exercise Iron Fist is a bilateral training exercise between the Japanese Western Army Infantry Regiment, the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and several Southern California-based Marine units

Ospreys makes first at-sea West Coast landing

SAN DIEGO — It was a picture-perfect day Tuesday on the Pacific Ocean — and a long awaited landing — when the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft arrived on the deck of the amphibious assault ship Makin Island.
While other Ospreys have deployed overseas and operated in the combat zone in Afghanistan, the at-sea landing by an Osprey with the “Sea Elks” of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 166 marked the first time the aircraft landed and conducted flight operations from an amphibious ship in the Pacific Ocean, according to the Navy. Another MV-22 Osprey with VMM-161, the “Greyhawks” squadron also based at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, also made the squadron’s first shipboard landing that day.
The honors went to the San Diego-based Makin Island, the Navy’s newest big-deck amphibious ship, which commemorated the event by posting several photos of the flight deck action on the ship’s official Facebook page.
The Gator ship has been training off the Southern California coast with Marines and a contingent of Japanese ground self-defense forces during the annual bilateral “Iron Fist” exercise. The ship will leave later this year on its maiden overseas deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Pendleton, Calif.
